Matt is an experienced Industrial Designer and Design Educator with over 32 years in the creative and academic industries.
He started out in the late 80's as a professional draughtsman designing ceramic pool layouts and large scale mosaics for clients such as Centre Parcs and the London Underground, East Surrey Hospital and a number of national leisure centre builds.
He moved into engineering in the early 90's and trained as a mechanical design engineer.

After leaving to travel for a couple of years, he enrolled on the Product Design Undergraduate programme at the University of East London, graduating in 1999 with a First Class Bachelor of Science Degree and winning the Alba Plc Design Prize for his design major of a Remote Adjustable Flat Screen Television Stand (an expensive novelty back then!)
Since 1999 Matt has worked as an Industrial/Product Designer/Design Engineer mostly focused with innovators, inventors, established businesses and start ups providing design solutions for the feasibility of new ideas, innovation ventures and new products.
In 2001, he set up Product Design Lab (PDL), an outward facing Design Service based in the Enterprise Department 'Knowledge Dock' of the University of East London tasked with supporting London based businesses with strategic design process integration, tangible design service solutions and advice/support. Originally primed with London Development Agency and European Regional Development Funding for a two year period, Matt went on to run the Lab for 9 years as a non-for-profit organisation until the University disbanded the Knowledge Dock Services in 2010.
In November 2010, he incorporated Hurley Product Design and Development Ltd trading as HPDD, which was more or less the spin out of PDL and ran it from his home studio in South East London. HPDD is now in its' 11th year and has continued to define the ethic that good design ought not cost the earth, should be centred around the 'end user' and should be accessible to all that have feasible ideas that impact peoples' lives for the better.
In 2008, Matt became an Advisor/Expert in Product Design Development and Innovation Strategy Planning for Ideas21, voluntarily attending their monthly one-2-one Advice Clinics at the Business and Intellectual Property Centre (BIPC) at the British Library, Central London. Sitting with an IP lawyer, the service offered free advice and support to people wanting to develop new businesses with innovation at the centre of that business. He also became part of their 'Ask an Expert' on-line service.
Matt has also ran workshops at the BIPC on Design Strategy, Business Planning for Design Focused Start-Ups and Designer Engagement Strategies.
In 2012, Matt became Visiting Lecturer on the Product Design BA Undergraduate Programme and the Product Design MA Programme at the University of the Creative Arts, Farnham and Rochester Campuses.
In 2013, Matt became Visiting Lecturer at the University of East London on the Product Design BSc Undergraduate Programme.
In 2015, Matt was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.
In 2016, Matt took the role of Senior Lecturer/Module Leader at the University of East London on the Product Design BSc Undergraduate Programme.
